John Zorn's The Turner Etudes!

 Hi everyone,

The record company says this about this album:

An epic suite of short pieces for solo piano inspired by the later sketches of the great English painter J.M.W. Turner. Subtitled Images and Impressions for Piano this expansive suite includes a variety of styles and forms including études, preludes, color studies, seascapes, moonscapes, nocturnes and impromptus. One of Zorn's longest compositions, this major new work for solo piano is brilliantly performed by Stephen Gosling, a long time Zorn specialist and one of the best new music pianists in the world.

It's a beautiful work.

John Zorn's Les Maudits!

Hi everyone,

Here is a recent new release by that brilliant genius John Zorn. Here's how his record company describes this record:

Les Maudits presents three dynamic chamber pieces inspired by heroic ‘cursed’ artists of French culture. Demolishing all boundaries and pushing the artistic envelope beyond all expectations, "Ubu" is one of Zorn’s greatest and most outrageous creations--a bizarre musical portrait of the subversive writer Alfred Jarry and his powerful Pataphyisical figure Ubu. The Ubu plays were a powerful precursor to many of the European avant-garde experiments of the early 20th century (Dada, Surrealism, Theatre of the Absurd, Futurism, postmodernism), and Zorn captures the vulgar, rebellious, gluttonous, childish and revolutionary spirit of Ubu in this major new studio composition.

Accompanying this work are two pieces performed by the International Contemporary Ensemble under the direction of David Fulmer. A concerto grosso in three movements inspired by the work of radical French poet Charles Baudelaire, and Oviri (‘savage' in Tahitian) a touching elegy to Paul Gauguin, the influential and comple
x artist who helped redefine painting in the 20th century.

Just awesome!

Mogwai's As the Love Continues!

 Hi everyone,

Mogwai's new album was recorded during the pandemic, & what a thing of beauty it is. Here's what Wikipedia says:

Mogwai started writing for the album in February 2020 shortly before the COVID-19 pandemic hit the United Kingdom, and due to the resultant lockdown the various band members had to write remotely without playing together; guitarist Stuart Braithwaite commented that "...not being able to leave the settee or go out of the house for more than one hour ... definitely gave us more time to write music. And actually, it was good and gave us the focus to work on." The band were not able to record together until early August 2020, but owing to travel restrictions were unable to proceed with their original plan of recording with Dave Fridmann at his Tarbox Road Studios in New York. The band therefore moved to Vada Studios in Alcester, Warwickshire, with Fridmann producing remotely via Zoom. Braithwaite commented "It’s the only time we left Scotland since this whole thing began ... going to England being amazing is not a sentence I thought I’d ever say in my life."

 Just beautiful . . .
